Das Skeksis Netlabel Project hat seinen 10. Sampler unter dem Motto “Full Moon Over Noricum” veröffentlicht. Die Schatten sind mit dem Track “Gestade der Angst” vertreten und reihen sich ein in eine düstere Sammlung, die Erinnerungen an alte Horrorfilme weckt. Passend dazu stellt Skeksis auch ein Promovideo bereit. Mit dabei sind auch Soul in Sadness und Cronique.

Seit 15 Jahren existieren DIE SCHATTEN nun. Das Jubiläum ist Anlass nach vorne zu blicken – aber auch zurück. 1994 haben wir unser erstes Album aufgenommen. Und nun veröffentlichen wir es – neu und eigentlich erstmalig für die breite Öffentlichkeit – auf jamendo. Damals nur auf Cassette, mit handgemachtem Cover (CDs waren noch unerschwinglich) erhältlich gewesen aber im Studio natürlich schon auf DAT Band gemastert und deshalb heute digital in die Welt geschleudert.

Ist das Dein Schicksal?

Rund um dieses Kernthema entfaltet sich die Musik von DIE SCHATTEN auf ihrem Debütalbum YGGDRASIL.

Innerhalb von nur zwei Tagen, nahmen sie das Album 1994 auf. Mit dem einschränkenden Stand der damaligen analogen Technik (Fostex-8 Spur-Bandmaschine) sowie eines heute ausgestorbenen Computer Operation Systems. Auf Grund der vielfältigen Beschränkungen wurden deshalb einige Stücke direkt live eingespielt. Zum Teil war dies auch Teil des damaligen Konzeptes, möglichst auf den Einsatz von Sequenzern oder Drummachines zu verzichten, d.h. für die Musik zwar Technik zu benutzen, dieser aber nicht das Musizieren selbst zu überlassen. Trotz der technischen Beschränkungen baut auch schon das Debüt die später besonders in Livekonzerten spürbare Schattentypische Spannung auf.

YGGDRASIL, der Weltenbaum der altnordischen Sagenwelt und gleichzeitig der Opener des Albums, ist dabei der Ausgangpunkt für Reisen zu verschiedenen menschlichen Schicksalen. Hier spinnen die Nornen an den Schicksalsfäden der Menschen, sei es in der Vergangenheit, der Gegenwart oder der Zukunft. DIE SCHATTEN sind die musikalischen Boten, welche die Kunde überbringen. Dabei reicht der Bogen von den kleinen, alltäglichen bis hin zu, mit dem Verstand kaum noch greifbaren menschlichen Schicksalen.

Zu den eher alltäglichen Lebenswegen zählen das kalt und lähmend empfundene Großstadtleben in FROST IM HIRN oder die STILLE in einer auseinandergelebten Beziehung, die nur noch durch Sex lebt. Zu diesem zwischenmenschlichen Reigen passt auch das leise ELEGOS, das klassisch das Ende einer Liebe auf einer Paris-Reise thematisiert.

Abseits unserer normalen Erfahrungswelt, konfrontiert uns DRAMA mit den Taten des Kindermörders Jürgen Bartsch. DIE SCHATTEN werfen hier die Frage auf, inwiefern dessen eigene Kindheit zu seinem blutigen Schicksal beigetragen hat. Drama ist auch ein Beispiel für das damalige Konzept, denn der Titel wurde auch live ohne Sequenzer gespielt, d.h. die Drumline wurde live vom Keyboarder gespielt.

Doch nicht nur Einzelschicksale werden thematisiert. DIE SCHATTEN greifen philosophisch auch Fragen auf, die die ganze Menschheit betreffen. Sei es die aufkeimende Hoffnung der Überlebenden nach dem atomaren WINTER oder der Zweifel eines Astronauten, ob wir außerirdisches Leben ERKENNEN UND MORALisch verstehen können oder ob wir den Kontakt lieber ganz vermeiden sollten.

Letzendlich bleibt eine düstere VISION des Lebens und seiner Widrigkeiten. Die Frage ob man sein Schicksal hinnimmt oder doch aktiv eingreifen kann, muss jeder Hörer für sich entscheiden. Doch die Schatten zeigen mit Ihrem Debütalbum YGGDRASIL die Facetten der Möglichkeiten auf

The band DIE SCHATTEN has now been in 15 years. The anniversary is an occasion to look forward – but also back. In 1994, we recorded our first album. And now we publish it – new and really for the first time for the general public. On Jamendo! At that time only on tape, with handmade-Cover (CDs were still prohibitively expensive) but of course, already stored on DAT tape at the studio. So here it is!

Is this your destiny?

The music of DIE SCHATTEN unfolds around this central theme on their debut album YGGDRASIL.

Within just two days, they recorded it in 1994. By limiting state of the former analog technology (Fostex 8-track tape machine) and a now extinct computer operating system. Due to the multiple restrictions therefore some tracks were recorded directly live. In part, this was also part of the former concept, as far as possible to waive by the use of sequencers or drum machine. Means support music through technology, but the technology does not even play it.

Despite the technical limitations the debut already builds the appreciable schatten-Typical voltage, later especially in live concerts.

YGGDRASIL, the World Tree of the World Old Norse legends, and the opener of the album is the starting point for trips to various human fates. Here Norne spin the threads on the fate of the people, whether in the past, present or future. Die Schatten are musical messengers who bring the message. It ranges the gamut from the small and everyday to hardly tangible sense of human fates.

Among the more or less everyday lives counts the cold and paralyzing life in metropolitan perceived in FROST IM HIRN. Or STILLE about a relationship lived apart in a manner it lives through sex only. To this interpersonal round dance fits well the soft ELEGOS that deals with the end of a classic love on a Paris travel.

Away from the ordinary experience of our world, DRAMA confronts us with the deeds of the child murderer Juergen Bartsch. DIE SCHATTEN raise of the question of how does his own childhood contributed to his bloody fate. DRAMA is also an example of the former approach of minimalism, because this title was also played live without a sequencer, the drumlines was played live by the man behind the keyboard.

But not only individual fates are discussed. DIE SCHATTEN draw philosophical issues that concern all humanity. Whether it is the budding hope of survivors after the nuclear winter or a doubt one of the astronauts, if we RECOGNIZE extraterrestrial life and moral understanding, or whether we prefer the contact should be avoided entirely (ERKENNEN & MORAL).

Finally a gloomy VISION of life and its adversities remains. The question whether one accepts his fate or may actively intervene it, each listener must decides for themselves. But DIE SCHATTEN shows with their debut album YGGDRASIL the facets of the possibilities.

A short view back after one month at jamendo. We have not conquer the streaming charts (only once in the first week a very high number) and 790 plays and 85 downloads are not a new world record. Anyhow we are satisfied. Because we have got 8 magnificent reviews and fans and a voting about 8.8.

I love statistics. The figures for Jamendo are just a small excerpt from the life of “Estuans Interius”. It was downloadable many years (since 2000) on our homepage and at mp3.de. There are no exact statistics for the homapage, but the traffic data can be an estimation.
